I was lucky enough last week to be invited along to Smyths Toy Superstore in St Helens, where their Baby Experts were doing a demonstration of some products that are currently on sale – specifically the car seats, highlighting some essential safety features that parents need to be aware of when purchasing such items.
I’ve never actually visited a Smyths so I was looking forward to seeing what joys a huge ‘toy superstore’ held for this new Mum. I wasn’t disappointed.
If I felt miniscule when I walked in, I can’t imagine what it’s like as a child. Like walking into Hogwarts or something similar! The shelving units which display the toys are huge!
When I did some research on Smyths as the opportunity arrived into my inbox, I assumed that they did toys for older children. How I was wrong. The Baby Room is located at the back of the St Helens store and they have a huge range of baby accessories, essentials and toys from bottles to travel cots. There is also a Facebook group for parents to join, to share all things baby.
As we were there to watch a demonstration on the fitting of car seats, we did spend some time looking at the range available – at first, they all looked the same. It wasn’t until after we learned just what ‘isofix‘ meant (it attaches to specialised car fittings) and were given guidance in baby weights that they made sense. We were also advised that babys aren’t supposed to sleep long periods in car seats or prams. While it may seem easier to leave them tucked up after dozing off, we learned it can be detrimental which was an eye opener!
We haven’t invested in our car seat yet, so having the chance to speak to experts was invaluable – it put my mind at ease and have me some solid recommendations.
Featured travel systems: Babylo Panorama 2 in 1 Travel System and the Cosatto Giggle 3 in 1 Pram and Pushchair with car seat (print exclusive to Smyths).
After the car seats, we were given the chance to have a good look at some of the travel systems on sale. I’m personally a fan of the Cosatto Giggle 3 in 1. Adorned with an exclusive fox print, it features a carrycot suitable for baby to sleep in overnight due to its flat reinforced base. Much more reassuring after finding out the dirty truth behind car seats and prams!
Overall, I really enjoyed this experience. It was casual enough to not be intimidating – I felt confident enough to ask questions and chat to people which was a relief. Mixing with other Mums and hearing they have the same niggles as me makes me feel a bit more human, and less of a bad Mum!
Smyths also put a lot of emphasis on their ‘open door policy’ – meaning as a new parent you can go in and have a chat. Even if it’s just venting a little or getting something off of your chest, staff welcome you to go in and unload. Pressures on new Mothers and Fathers can be incredible, and I find it so reassuring that a store out there has taken notice of that.
