Laundry capsules and powders are always something I’ve struggled to buy on a modest budget — until Aldi opened up nearby, I’d have to be very strict with my washing routines. Then BB arrived and I realised keeping on top of laundry as a mother is hard work — the basket seems to perpetually fill and the I’ve never had satisfaction of an empty basket.
I used to buy the very pocket-friendly Aldi Bio Dual Chamber Laundry Sachets, because I found pods are much easier to throw into the machine when chasing around after Mike and BB. Boxes of powder are a nightmare to store for us because we don’t have the cupboard space at a height level BB can’t access, so they end up sitting in plain sight and taking up worktop space, so the plastic box was always convenient too.
Who are smol?
smol are a company who have given the laundry capsules market a new spin.
Using ‘smol technology’ they’ve created a laundry capsule which uses less chemicals than other brands, but with no loss to performance. For a monthly amount, you receive a number of these capsules to your door each month — all packaged up in materials which are responsibly sourced, sustainable and 100% recyclable.
The thing I love about smol capsules are also leaping bunny certified, meaning they’re cruelty free and no ingredients used in smol capsules are derived from animals.
Hint: Having trouble deciding between bio and none bio laundry products? Bio contains enzymes which help break down stains — non-bio doesn’t and is therefore that bit kinder to skin.
I sided with non-bio until BB is a little bit older, but I’m pretty sure even now he would be fine with the bio capsules.
How much is it per month?
You can give smol a go at the moment for the princely sum of £1 as they have a free trial period — you only pay for postage and nine capsules tailored towards your needs will be delivered to your door just so you can give it a little test to see if it’s to your standards.
Signing up to the trial, you give details about your laundry routines such as how many times of day you do a load, how many capsules you use per load and if you use bio or none bio. Then, depending on your answers they work out just how often you’ll need to have a delivery. I do one load a day when I’m on top of things, so it was decided I’d have 24 capsules per month delivered.
The price? £3.85 a month.
Yes, the Aldi capsules I used to buy are £2.70 but I used to have to buy multiple boxes during the month — so it added up. Now, a box of 24 capsules lasts me the month, and I’ve found I don’t need to pick up extra boxes just to cover my daily laundry loads.
But they use plastic packaging!
When it comes to packaging, smol need something hardy that can withstand the journey from them to me, and they need to tick certain boxes for regulatory purposes as any laundry company is bound by laws which are to prevent children getting hold of the products. Therefore, they do still use plastic packaging, but they use a 100% recyclable plastic.
The box is compact enough to fit through the letterbox, and strong enough to withstand the transportation of the capsules via our Royal Mail system. I’ve not had a broken capsule yet!
You can even send the packaging it back to smol so they can reuse it. They do recommend that you wait until you have a few, then pop them in a Jiffy bag and send it back to the PO Box address printed on the boxes. Otherwise, pop it into your kerbside recycling box!
Using the capsules
I’ve just come to the end of my trial pack, which contains nine capsules. Obviously I have a little one so I chose non-bio, and I can safely say these pack a punch for such tiny capsules. I had my doubts as they were so tiny, even considering adding two to the wash but there was absolutely no need — one does the job, and your laundry comes out smelling fresh and clean.
smol do recommend that if its a particularly dirty wash (rugby kits, anyone?) or a heavy load then adding two capsules is ideal, otherwise simply toss one capsule to the back of your machine and do your usual wash.
They’ve lifted all the every day nasties that are picked up either as a toddler having an adventure, or as a working man who does a bit of everything.
Will I be using smol in the future?
I’m not disappointed in the quality of the product or its cleaning, not at all — I’m actually looking forward to my next package arriving!
